Winter Program Series Starts Saturday at Heart Mountain

A compelling winter program series featuring classes in Japanese food, drink and culture and lessons of the Apsáalooke nation will begin Saturday at the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center. 

Led by Haruka Takaku, Heart Mountain’s Japan Outreach Initiative coordinator, and Historic Site Caretaker Johnny Tim Yellowtail, the series will examine the various cultures that have called the area around Heart Mountain home for centuries.

The first session–From Heart Mountain to Christmas in Japan: History & Origami Craft–begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 6, a the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center. Haruka will talk about Christmas in Japan and at the camp. Guests will also make an origami (Japanese art of paper folding) ornament to take home.

Future events include classes in making mochi, the soft Japanese rice cakes favored by many inside Heart Mountain and outside, lessons of Apsáalooke leaders, such as Robert Yellowtail and Grant Bulltail, and dance. 

Prices for each event range between $10 and $25. Heart Mountain members receive a 20 percent discount.
