Volunteer at Heart Mountain

Join us and volunteer at Heart Mountain today! Every day, we work to greet and educate visitors, process and preserve Heart Mountain artifacts, and maintain our museum and grounds. We do all this with the help of our amazing volunteer corps. The experience of volunteering at Heart Mountain Interpretive Center can be incredibly rewarding, and we are always seeking out dedicated volunteers.

Education and Interpretation

Do you have a passion for teaching? Do you work well with school age children? The Center hosts over 50 school groups from grades 4-12 during the academic year! We are seeking docents to facilitate 15-20 minutes talks with the students in the museum. Don’t worry, there are plenty of opportunities to shadow before talking to a group on your own and you don’t have to know all of the answers! Working with kids not your thing? We always need help assisting staff at the front desk during our busy summer months!

Historic Structures and Gardens

Enjoy being outside and getting your hands dirty? The Center has two different gardens and tends the grounds around the hospital structures, walking trail and memorial honor roll, and the relocated barrack. We are looking for help planting the garden, harvesting and upkeep during the summer (bonus: keep what you pick!), and keeping the areas around the center looking nice!

Archives

Have you always wanted to see the artifacts behind the glass in the museum up close and personal? The Center has a collection of over 2,000 items including books, documents, photographs, and artifacts related to the camp. We need help processing, digitizing, and safeguarding these collection items. No prior experience necessary, just a passion for preserving historic items!

Pilgrimage and Events

The Center hosts over 300 people to our annual Pilgrimage the last weekend of July every year! Many of the attendees are former incarcerees returning to Heart Mountain and their descendants. The Pilgrimage is a huge operation, and we are always seeking more hands to help out with set-up, registration, way-finding, chair moving, question answering, and more! Throughout the year we also host public talks, special events and exhibit openings, and an annual Holiday Open House. Follow us on Facebook for up-to-date information on events.
